The Hannahs began singing southern gospel music back in 1980. When George Hannah, of Searcy, Arkansas, discovered that his three children (oldest son Russell, daughter Sharon, and youngest son Robbie) not only had a talent to sing, but also that they had the ability to harmonize quite well together. Along with George singing bass, they began to sing songs in four-part harmony. A lot of folks were amazed that youngsters could harmonize so well, and soon they began to get invitations to sing at many church singings through out their home state of Arkansas. George kept them booked most of the time , for church singings, revival meetings, benefits, and fund raisers. Before long , they were singing so well together, that they began to serve as an opening act for some of their gospel music heroes, such as The Inspirations and The Kingsmen.
They continued to sing like this through out the 1980's, then sister Sharon married and moved to the state of Kentucky. This put the group on hold for a little while. Then in 1990 , Russell met his soon to be wife, Shirley. In 1992 they were married. Shirley was a shy young lady from Los Angeles, California , who never had sang before. " People used to tease me " says Russell, "and say that I married Shirley because she could sing. But I honestly had no idea that she could sing. I don't even think that she knew that she could sing." Russell continues to tell, " One day we were driving down the road listening to the radio. And there was a Christmas song playing. Shirley was singing along very softly. And I was listening very closely. And I could tell that she was keeping the melody perfectly. Just then she began to put in a little harmony. All of the sudden, I yelled out (You can sing!). Russell began to encourage and coach her into singing at church. Then it wasn't long until the Hannahs were singing again.
In 1996 the Hannahs recorded their first studio CD titled " I'm following the one who knows the way." The group's line-up at this time was, Shirley Hannah-alto vocals. Russell Hannah-lead vocals, Robbie Hannah-baritone vocals, and George Hannah-bass vocals.
The group continued to record several other CD's through the years that would contain some songs that had been written by brothers, Russell and Robbie, along with many classic southern gospel songs as well.
In 2003 , (father) George Hannah, left the group to pursue his own business. But for that past year, George had been unable to make several dates that the group had. And the Hannahs had been using a fill-in bass singer to cover his spot. A man by the name of Dwayne Holleman, who is also a deacon from the Hannahs' home church, Landmark Baptist. .So, since Dwayne had the voice to do the job, and had already been singing their songs, he was without a doubt their first choice for new bass singer.
In 2006 the latest member to join the group was Dwayne's son, guitarist Jeff Holleman. Jeff had been assisting the group for special singing at church, and the group thought he would make a great addition to their live performances.
The Hannahs latest recording, is their eighth CD titled ,"The Gospel Truth." And they plan to record again in the spring of 2009.
The Hannahs are not just a group that loves to sing, but a group that loves Jesus. Each member can say that they personally know Jesus Christ in the forgiveness of sin. And they feel that they are ambassadors of His great gospel, called to sing where ever the Lord leads.
